The Building Blocks: Response to Appropriation Article

RESPONSE

The Students for Free Culture’s logo is three lego bricks building on each other. I think this is a perfect visual metaphor for the importance of having an “open content culture.” I believe a society that freely shares original work will thrive because it will have the ability to build on the successes it has already achieved.

After reading this Appropriation Article and our other class readings and watching RiP!: A Remix Manifesto I believe that our country and world would benefit from copyright law reform allowing free content sharing. I do agree that any original artist should receive some form of recognition or limited rights to payment, but nothing like what is in place today.

Every year myself and another brother from my fraternity have created short movies for our Greek Week competitions and Rush Videos. All of these videos feature copyrighted material, usually music. I would hate to be…
